Before the light bulb, people had gotten quite creative in how to light their places: The classic wick burner we all know is just the tip of the iceberg.
The lamp I try to fix today creates a rather sharp flame with the use of a spirit burner and then directs it at a mesh of salt crystals which then start to glow!
