In this video, we walk through real-world site prep and application techniques when working with older masonry, particularly homes built 50+ years ago. Whether you're a DIYer or professional contractor, these tips will help you avoid costly mistakes when using silicate masonry stains and sealers.
🧱 Brick & Mortar Inspection Tips:
Always inspect the mortar joints—run your fingers across them to check for soft or flaking mortar.
Many homes have no records of tuckpointing, so err on the side of caution.
If mortar is deteriorating, you may need spot tuckpointing or in severe cases, a full grind-out and repoint before applying any coating or stain.
Most people overlook this step, especially before buying a home!
🎨 Applying Silicate Stain – Best Practices:
Touch-ups should only be done within 5 minutes of application.
Never return after 30 minutes to fix a spot—it may result in lighter or blotchy patches due to uneven curing.
Wait 12 hours between coats to allow for full absorption.
Final cure time is 7 days, though during colder, rainy seasons it may take up to 2 weeks.
🌡 Temperature Matters:
Recommended ambient and surface temperature range: 41°F to 87°F
Be aware: Direct sun on clay or brick can raise surface temps to 120°F+
Start your work in the coolest sunlit area early in the day, and work away from the sun
🔄 Stopping Mid-Job? Use the Tooth-In Method:
If you need to pause, never stop mid-brick.
Always stop along mortar lines on all four sides (as shown in the thumbnail).
On EIFS or stucco, stop at natural panel breaks or full seams—treat it like you're staining wood.
💧 When and Where to Apply Masonry Sealer:
Apply our Masonry Sealer on any area exposed to:
Excessive moisture or ground-level water
Winter salt application
Chemical sprays for landscaping or weeds
These conditions can lower the pH of your masonry, weakening the stain bond over time.
Sealer should be applied 3–7 days after staining, once the surface is dry and fully cured.
