Approximately 95% of melatonin is produced in our cells. Only about 5% comes from the pineal gland. Its role as an antioxidant is less known than its function within the sleep-wake cycle. Melatonin is an important regulator of mitochondrial metabolism with regards to acetyl-CoA production and optimization of Kreb cycle and electron transport chain activity. Three important compounds are controlled by the influence of melatonin: SIRT3, SOD, and HIF-1 alpha. This video from Kurt N. Woeller, DO of Integrative Medicine Academy will explain mitochondrial melatonin and its influence with regard to mitochondrial function, including SIRT3, etc. The information for this video comes from the Mitochondria Mastery Course.
