TREMOR
Tremor is a short cycle of songs under the sign of the earthquake. The Great Lisbon Earthquake, smaller ones, the seismic dangers of the future, the countless shocks and tremors that are lurking in our wake, which we have passed, and which, if we are lucky, we survive. Songs for a female voice, with a chorus and instrumental accompaniment, Tremor doesn’t intend to tell a story or describe a character; it’s an almost abstract exercise of moods from words, from images, many of them taken from historical documents, namely the descriptions of the city of Lisbon, the movement of the earth, the devastation. This is not about using the earthquake as an allegory, but about placing the earthquake and other human experiences of dread and finitude on a continuum, elaborating on a very small vocabulary, vocal and musical grammar of anxieties, fears, and escapes. Some songs are “text songs”, almost lyrical poems, but others intend to be experiences taken from the core of simple ideas, of strong ideas, that for some will remind concrete facts and for others it will be an act of imagination, of expansion of possibilities, as if the words themselves had the opening of meanings of a musical excerpt.
