7 Reasons NOT to move to Phoenix, Arizona
1. The Heat
Phoenix has many redeeming qualities and reasons to live here. But like any place, it's not perfect. So let's talk about seven reasons that you may not want to live in Phoenix. The heat is no joke, and our summer lasts from May until October. Our winters are amazing, but it's the trade off for all that summer heat. So if you're used to and looking for a place with four seasons, then Phenix may not be the place for you.
2. Urban Sprawl
I'm pretty sure Phoenix is the birthplace of urban sprawl, and the metro area covers over 14,000 square miles. Land has always been cheap here, so the motto has been Drive until you qualify. So developers have continued to build brand new communities further and further from the center of the city. Another downside to the urban sprawl is that all of these communities are new and they're very homogenous.
3. Everything is BROWN
Homes and buildings are all covered in stucco and various shades of beige. Most communities have a homeowners association. They do have a lot of rules. You know, one of those is they're going to limit what colors you can choose to paint your house. So this ultimately leads to a pretty boring aesthetic in many neighborhoods.
4. Franchise Hell
Another issue with a brand new community, is it takes a large developer to build such a huge project and they like to work with companies that they know are going to be successful.
This means a lot of franchise restaurants and big box stores. So if you're looking for unique and one off family type restaurants and shops, the outer edges of the Phoenix metro area may not be for you.
5. Snowbirds
Every year, 300,000 to 400,000 people relocate to Phoenix for the winter to take advantage of the weather. If you live near a community that's 55 and over, there are some things that you're going to have to deal with, namely more traffic, larger crowds at events and more people and longer wait times if you're trying to get into a restaurant.
6. High Utility Bills
In the summer, we hide in our air conditioned homes to avoid the sun and 100 degree temps. It's not cheap to run your AC all day and night, so the average utility bill during the summer can be anywhere between 3 to $800 a month.
7. People move here
Historically, Phoenix has been one of the more popular places to move too and is routinely in the top three for fastest growing cities in the country.
Strong job markets have led a lot of companies to relocate to Phoenix and with that comes a lot of employees seeking better paying jobs. So every year, more and more people are moving to Phoenix.
