Human ingenuity or stupidity? You decide! In 1882 the stakes were high, money to be made. Nothing was stopping the building of the Carson Colorado Railroad into Owens Valley CA from Candelaria, NV. Not the winter and not the 7167-ft high Montgomery Pass. The only tunnel on that railroad line would be dug in the dead of winter - thanks to the many Chinese workers the railroad made it down into the valley by spring and, while the tracks are gone, the road is still there! Best culverts ever!
The tunnel, slowly being buried by mother Earth, stands solidly as do the many berms, walls, and culverts. Man, did they constructs tight turns in the road to minimize the grade and still has a 4% grade section to deal with. The road, just like the steam locomotives of the time, like the CCRW SP #18 were build to last. Check it out, just off HWY 6, a nice hike into history of the high Great Basin Desert.
