X44 Sargeants Bros. Hay-on-Wye to Kingstone Bus.
The Sargeants Bros X44 Bus Line runs from Brecon to Hay-on-Wye and Hereford Railway station.
The Dot Matrix Displays generally state:
Aberhonddu is Brecon in Welsh, Y Gelli or Y Gelli Gandryll is Hay-on-Wye, Henffordd is Hereford.
The bus YX25 OGP and has a Red Livery on the X44 1707 from Brecon/Aberhonddu to Hay-on-Wye/Y Gelli and Hereford/Henffordd Railway Station.
Sargeants
Sargeants ADL Enviro200 MMC. The Alexander Denis Limited Enviro200 MMC is a Diesel Single Decker bus. The MMC means a Major Model Change. The Enviro200 MMC bodywork is also available as an all-electric bus, known as the Alexander Dennis Enviro200EV with EV being Electric Vehicle.
Alexander Denis buses are made in Larbert in the Falkirk Council area, which is the historic County of Stirlingshire, in Scotland, United Kingdom.
Sargeants Bros are based in Kington in Herefordshire with bus services in Powys and Herefordshire. Sargeants serve the historic Welsh counties of Brecknockshire, Radnorshire which are part of Powys as well as Herefordshire in England.
Powys County Council have recently upgraded the rural bus services with more frequent and later running buses connecting towns to other towns and onward trains. Sargeants have run the X44 from September 1st 2025.
The bus leaves Hay-on-Wye along Oxford Road B4348 crossing into Cusop and thus from Powys, Wales into Herefordshire, England. The bus goes out of Parc Cenedlaethol Bannau Brycheiniog/Brecon Beacons National Park yet is still in the shadows of the Black Mountains. Nantyglasdwr Lane being the edge of the town. The bus goes along Hardwicke Road into the Achenfield area. The bus goes Hardwicke Turn and the along passing Scar Lane and onto Dorstone. The bus passed some road works on the way through the Golden Valley to Peterchurch. Peterchurch begins at the Nags Head Inn. The bus passes Poston Mill Park. The bus goes near Vowchurch Turn and climbs up and down into the Wye Valley passing Madley. The bus passes Goose's Foot Industrial Estate and into Kingstone.
Some Railway History.
Hay-on-Wye railway station was on the Hereford, Hay and Brecon Railway opened 11 July 1864, as well as the Golden Valley Railway. The original Hereford, Hay and Brecon Railway which became part of the Midland Railway. After 1923 it became part of the London, Midland and Scottish Railway (LMS). In 1948 it became part of British Railways. It was part of the Western Region. of British Railways. The station was closed in 1962.
The Golden Valley Railway Company opened the first part of its line from Pontrilas to Dorstone in 1881. It was constantly beset with shortage of money, but opened an extension to Hay in 1889.
In 1898 the company was sold to the Great Western Railway in 1899.
Passenger operation on the line ceased in 1941 in the time of the Second World War and it closed permanently in 1957.
