FIRE-UP this is the Ayrton Senna’s Monaco Grand Prix winning car, 1992 McLaren MP4/7-07!
At Griot’s Garage — the iconic car care and automotive culture destination in Tacoma, Washington — one of the standout pieces of automotive history on display in 2025 was the legendary McLaren MP4/7-07 once driven by Ayrton Senna, one of the greatest Formula 1 drivers of all time. This rare grand prix machine, famously campaigned in the early 1990s and part of McLaren’s rich racing heritage, represents an era when F1 was defined by visceral engine sound, cutting-edge engineering, and some of the sport’s most memorable battles on the world stage.
The F1 car was the follow-up of the successful MP4/6 from the 1991 season. McLaren planned that the all-new MP4/7 would make its debut during the fourth race of the season, the Spanish Grand Prix. But due to the speed of the Williams car during pre-season testing, Ron Dennis decided to bring out the new car one race earlier at Brazil, one month earlier than previously planned.
The MP4/7-07 was the first McLaren with a semi-automatic transmission. The transmission was a McLaren-designed electro-hydraulic unit with semi-automatic activation. The new system allowed the drivers to keep their foot on the pedal as the throttle cable was replaced with an electronic sensor. It also controlled the engine speed automatically during gear changes.
The McLaren team was unable to win the Constructors' or Drivers' Championship in 1992 but collected five Grand Prix victories. Three for Ayrton Senna and two for team mate Gerhard Berger.
The 1992 Monaco Grand Prix was a Formula One motor race held on 31 May 1992 at the Circuit de Monaco. It was the sixth race of the 1992 Formula One World Championship. The 78-lap race was won by Ayrton Senna, driving a McLaren-Honda. Drivers' Championship leader Nigel Mansell took pole position in his Williams-Renault and led until lap 71, when he suspected he had a puncture and made a pit stop for new tyres. He emerged behind Senna, closed up to the Brazilian and tried to find a way past but without success, Senna holding on to win by 0.2 seconds. It was Senna's fifth Monaco Grand Prix win, equaling the record set by Graham Hill.
