After two Achilles' tendon ruptures in 1987 and his rehabilitation in Portland, Sabonis won a gold medal at the 1988 Summer Olympics, in South Korea, for the Soviet Union with an historical win against the USA national team with future NBA stars David Robinson, Mitch Richmond and Danny Manning in the semifinals.
