Kallstenius developed his special tone language during his period of study in Leipzig 1904-1907. According to what he has told, this tone language grew up, in a way that was almost incomprehensible to him, in some chamber music that he started work on in Leipzig and finished in his home town at that time, Lund: a cello sonata, a violin sonata and a string quartet.

In Cello Sonata Op. 6 the composer is well on the way toward his characteristic, unconventional style. Sometimes it manifests itself completely, e.g. in expressive minor triads which in a typical manner for the composer make their appearance without any preparation, without any traditional harmonic connection with the surroundings. Kallstenius has himself stressed that the technique of joining chords without common tones is an important component of his musical style. In 1963 he made a slight revision of the cello sonata, which did not at all change its character.

In the first movement of the sonata two thematic ideas work against each other in the traditional manner (Kallstenius retained the sonata form throughout his whole life). The one moves over a large range, with rapidity and litheness but “dolce” and softly. The other one is toned down too, but contrasts in its calm. The powerful and dramatic sections of the movement lie in the development of the themes. The subsequent Intermezzo in a slow tempo is a short embroidery on a folk-song-like theme, unsentimental as always with Kallstenius. The finale opens with a bouncing main theme, a rondo that leads into several purely lyrical sections.
