Kilomètre Lancé 2023: Sauber C9, Valkyrie, DKW 250cc, 3-Eleven, 512 M Replica, Porsche Tractors!

Explaining in a few words what the Kilomètre Lancé consists of is difficult. Explaining it with a short video is even more so. What is certain is that there's a little bit of everything for everyone: from cars to motorcycles, planes and even tractors in this year's edition.

I attended the event for the first time last year, unfortunately affected by bad weather which didn't allow the program to be carried out as best as possible. Things were way better in 2023, except that in the afternoon the wind blew in the same direction as the vehicles, significantly reducing the noise of the engines during accelerations.

The Kilomètre Lancé is a revival event of the original competition held in 1929 and 1930 as the starting event of the International St. Moritz Automobile Week. This week consisted of a rally, the kilometer race, a skill race, a concours d'elegance and the Bernina hillclimb race. For the second one, the dead-straight section of road between Samedan and Punt Muragl was the first asphalted road in Engadin and the venue for this spectacular race, in which the only thing that mattered was the maximum speed that could be achieved.

Of course nowdays these kind of sprint competitions are no longer held on public roads. The kilometer race, called by the organizers "Kilomètre Lancé", has been exhumed since 2021 as part of the modern International St. Moritz Automobile Week and it's held on the runway of Engadin Airport, in Switzerland, specially closed for this purpose. However Engadin Airport isn't only within sight of the historic venue, it also has a suitable track with its 1.8 km runway.

In addition to the numerous cars and motorbikes present, other interesting moments of the day were a brief airshow during the lunch break, featuring some aerobatics from a Pitts S1S and a formation fly by of a North American T-6 Texan and a Beechcraft Model 18, some practice runs from Indi Schläfli who is attempting to fly at 200 mph behind a car on his rollerblades (his current record is of 186 mph) and a fun race between various Porsche Diesel tractors models, with a Le Mans-style start!
