Exp.3: “To Observe the Effect of Nature of Applied Voltage on Breakdown in Air” by Dr. T. G. Arora, Electrical Engineering Department, Shri Ramdeobaba College of Engineering and Management, Nagpur (India).
Breakdown voltage in air depends on the following factors:
Electrode gap, electrode geometry, nature of the applied voltage, rate of rise of voltage and air density correction factor (pressure, temperature & humidity). In this experiment for a particular electrode geometry with the same distance and the same atmospheric conditions break-down phenomenon is observed with AC voltage, DC voltage of positive polarity & DC voltage of negative polarity. The graph is plotted between the breakdown voltage and the gap spacing for all three cases. The variation in BDV is evident from the characteristics.
