Fewer Tourists This Year, But Goa’s New Year Spirit Remains Undimmed

Goa may not be witnessing the tourist numbers it once did, but the festive fervour ahead of New Year’s Eve remains intact. Preparations began as early as Christmas, and while the crowds are smaller than expected, stakeholders say the turnout is still encouraging.

Factors such as higher airfares, more travel options elsewhere, and a slower post-Covid recovery have impacted footfall, with a noticeable dip in European tourists. However, domestic travellers continue to arrive in large numbers, especially in village belts.

Authorities and businesses have tightened safety and compliance measures—particularly for restaurants—following recent incidents, insisting celebrations will go on as planned. Locals, Indian and foreign tourists are all expected to come together to ring in the New Year with fireworks at midnight.
