One thing scenic artists do AAALLLL the time is making new things look old, and metal is one of my favorites. So here are the basics for quick and easy techniques that can get you started with painting faux patinas and rust.
The key to making faux patinas look realistic is the colors: make sure they are spot on and you really can't go wrong.
As for texture mediums, there are so many different things you can try and experiment with to get a variety of textures that will look like more or less oxidized metal. Play around and see what works for you! In this video for texture I used Rosco's Foam Coat, Sculpt-or-Coat, and sand.
For this video I used Rosco Off-Broadway paints.
