Hampyeong (함평) is a small county in South Korea’s Jeollanam-do province, best known for its Hampyeong Butterfly Festival, which showcases vibrant butterfly exhibitions, eco-tourism activities, and stunning floral displays. The area is rich in natural beauty, with scenic landscapes, rice fields, and ecological parks that attract visitors seeking a peaceful retreat from city life. Hampyeong is also famous for its high-quality Hampyeong Korean beef (한우), a regional delicacy.
Nearby, Gwangju (광주) is the largest city in Jeollanam-do and serves as the cultural and historical hub of the region. Known for its significant role in South Korea’s democratization movement, particularly the Gwangju Uprising of 1980, the city is home to various memorial sites and museums dedicated to democracy and human rights. Gwangju is also a UNESCO Creative City of Media Arts, offering a vibrant arts scene, trendy cafes, and renowned local cuisine, including Tteokgalbi (grilled short rib patties). It’s a key transportation hub, making it easy to travel between Gwangju and smaller surrounding towns like Hampyeong.
