BPI Partners completed a comprehensive riparian mitigation project in East Austin, transforming an eroded, invasive-choked stream corridor into a stable, compliant, and fully functional riparian buffer. This video walks through Phase 1, Phase 2, and Phase 3 of the project, including Grade Control Structure (GCS) installation, pollutant filtration improvements, stormwater velocity management, and native habitat development.
PHASE 1: Initial Site Conditions
The project began with a detailed site assessment to identify environmental and hydrological risks within a TCEQ-regulated Critical Water Quality Zone.
Work included:
• Identifying invasive vegetation and overgrowth
• Assessing unstable streambanks and unmanaged flow
• Defining high-water mark elevations for design accuracy
• Evaluating sediment types and pollutant pathways
This baseline assessment ensured the riparian mitigation plan aligned with both ecological and regulatory requirements.
PHASE 2: Grade Control Structure Installation (GCS)
To stabilize the channel, prevent incision, and improve stormwater performance, BPI Partners installed engineered Grade Control Structures:
• Install GCS to regulate stream elevation
• Utilize high water mark elevations for optimized flow distribution
• Reduce streambank erosion and channel degradation
• Support flood attenuation and stormwater stability
GCS are essential components of riparian mitigation projects, improving long-term geomorphic and hydrologic performance.
Water Quality + Habitat Foundations
Following stabilization, BPI Partners enhanced the water quality and ecological function of the site with targeted mitigation practices:
• Improve pollutant filtration (sediment, nutrients, metals)
• Support natural denitrification in riparian soils
• Prepare the channel for native vegetative systems
• Enhance long-term hydrological and ecological performance
• Provide food and shelter for wildlife habitat
These improvements form the foundation of long-term riparian buffer success.
PHASE 3: Habitat + Restoration Results
The final phase focused on establishing stable, native vegetation and habitat connectivity:
• Restore native vegetation to stabilize streambanks
• Filter pollutants before they reach waterways
• Reduce erosion and protect downstream infrastructure
• Reconnect wildlife habitat corridors
• Improve overall water quality and long-term watershed health
The completed riparian mitigation project now performs as a high-functioning green infrastructure system.
WHY RIPARIAN MITIGATION MATTERS IN CENTRAL TEXAS
Riparian mitigation is one of the most effective, cost-efficient strategies for improving water quality, reducing erosion, protecting infrastructure, and meeting regulatory requirements for new developments. In rapidly growing regions like Central Texas, these systems play a critical role in watershed health and stormwater compliance.
