From amateur to not-as-amateur
Over the past two years I’ve recorded 15 covers of songs by Tonetta. This project began as a way to teach myself how to record, mix, and master a song from scratch. I’ve played guitar for years and written the occasional song but didn’t have enough material to really practice mixing on — as I believe learning happens only when you do a lot of something rather than tinker away at the same project for hours on end. Quantity over quality. So I chose Tonetta’s stuff to work on because 1) I’m a massive fan and 2) any sound issues I was having definitely wouldn’t be attributable to the song inherently sucking (which is often where my mind would go when I was frustrated recording my own material). There’s no way the song could suck, it was a Tonetta song! It had to be something I was doing wrong that I could learn to do right.

Anyway, it’s been great learning to record and mix better and I’ve really appreciated the (mostly) positive and constructive feedback I’ve had from my (96!!!!) subscribers! I hope over the course of this project you can hear improvements in the recordings. Tracks like “Lazy Way Out” and “Apache Woman” were done early on and sound pretty rough whereas “Pressure Zone” or even the most recent “A Little Angel” I think sound much more polished. I still can’t figure out how to do a consistent and pleasant vocal recording though!

For anyone who’s followed me for the Tonetta covers in particular, don’t worry — this upload can be considered "volume 1". I’ll do more but for now I just want to take a few months to work on original material. This video is basically just a way to listen to and discuss the covers all in one place. Kind of like an album or mixtape format.
