本片记录了1955年在我国实行的农业合作化，对手工业和资本主义工商业的社会主义改造。在农村掀起农业合作化高潮，使全国农村几乎没有了单干户，农民都成为农业合作社的社员，集体劳动，按劳分配。在城市，手工业者也成立了合作社，对资本主义工商业实行公私合营，进行了社会主义改造，从此资本家成为自食其力的劳动者，成为企业的管理者。
