Youngmi Cho, "Jinogui(진오귀, 指路鬼)" for Shakuhachi and Electronics (2025)

Akihito Obama (小濱明人, shakuhachi) premiered "Jinogui" by Youngmi Cho at Salvia Hall, Yokohama Tsurumi Ward Cultural Center on September 28 in JSSA音楽祭2025.

The piece embodies a ‘Jinogui’ by the interplay between shakuhachi and electronics. The title, 'Jinogui', refers to a ghost name of gut(賽), through the stages to exorcise evil spirits, to guide souls to the afterlife, and then to pass into heaven, and signifies people’s wish for the salvation and happiness of the dead spirits. Although the actual guts are performed with many ceremonial steps for a day, in this work, it is condensed into three scenes: the demon(dokkeabi) part standing for obstacles inside and outside of life such as natural disasters or social oppression, the second part overcoming those obstacles to move forward, and the last part reaching the gate of the afterlife and finally ascends to the ranks of heavenly peace.

The sounds are performed by the shakuhachi player, the computer program receives the sounds digitally and reproduces the processed sounds, and then they are all fused in real time in a space, completing the implementation process through these three steps. The electronic processes are vocodeing effect, delay, reverb, spatialization, and sound synthesis of them, resulting in their timbral changes. Ultimately, the piece comes to the conclusion by pursuing audial interaction and fusion between sound and space. The main materials of the work are the melodies, rhythms, and instruments used in Korean gut and Japanese traditional music.

이 곡은 일본의 전통악기 사쿠하치와 전자음향의 상호작용을 통해 ‘진오귀’를 구현하는 작품이다. 작품의 제목, ‘진오귀’는 악귀를 쫓고 저승으로 영혼을 안내하여 극락왕생하도록 하는 진오귀굿의 귀신으로, 죽은 자의 구원과 행복을 비는 의미를 담고 있다. 실제 행해지는 굿은 오랜 시간 여러 복잡한 과정으로 구성되나, 이 작품에서는 자연재해와 사회적 억압 등 삶 안팎의 장애를 상징하는 도깨비 부분, 이를 헤치며 극락을 찾아가는 두번째 부분, 저승문을 거쳐 드디어 반열에 오르는 마지막의 세 부분으로 구성되었다.

사쿠하치 연주자가 소리를 발현하고, 연주된 악기 소리를 컴퓨터를 통해 디지털적으로 받아내고, 이를 실시간으로 처리한 전자음향을 내보내며 그 소리들이 융합하는 세 단계를 통해 그 구현과정을 재현한다. 전자적 처리 과정은, 보코더 효과, 딜레이와 리버브, 공간화와 소리합성 과정을 통한 음색 변화를 부과하고, 최종적으로 사운드와 공간 사이의 청각적 상호작용을 추구한다. 작품의 소재로, 진오귀굿에서 사용되는 선율과 리듬, 타악기들, 그리고 일본의 전통 악기와 선율, 리듬 등을 혼합하여 재료로 삼았다.
