Amicalola Falls State Park: our favorite hikes
Hike Amicalola Falls State Park to Georgia's tallest waterfall, the southernmost point of the Appalachian Trail, and a backcountry lodge on our favorite hiking trails.
Amicalola Falls State Park is nestled in North Georgia's mossy, waterfall-filled Chattahoochee National Forest, set in the rolling, vibrant-green southern Appalachian Mountains. It's one of the most popular, and most visited, of Georgia's State Parks – and for a good reason.
Amicalola Falls State Park & Lodge is an 829-acre (3.35 km2) Georgia state park located between Ellijay and Dahlonega in Dawsonville, Georgia. The park's name is derived from a Cherokee language word meaning "tumbling waters".[1] The park is home to Amicalola Falls, a 729-foot (222 m) waterfall that is the highest in Georgia.[2] However, an analysis conducted by the World Waterfall Data base suggests that the main part of the falls is 429 ft (131 m) in height, followed by a prolonged gently sloping run in which the flow drops another 279 ft (85 m).[3] It is considered to be one of the Seven Natural Wonders of Georgia. An 8-mile (13 km) trail that winds past Amicalola Falls and leads to Springer Mountain, famous as the southern terminus of the Appalachian Trail, begins in the park. Amicalola Falls State Park also offers many hiking trails, a guest lodge, restaurant, cabins, a shelter for long-distance Appalachian Trail hikers, a campground, and access to the eco-friendly Len Foote Hike Inn.

At the heart of the park, the Georgia's tallest waterfall spills down a towering bluff, falling 720 feet into a mossy, boulder-filled forest. It's the highest cascading falls east of the Mississippi River.
This towering waterfall is located 7.5 miles by hike from the southern end of the Appalachian Trail at Springer Mountain, and it's the closest access point to the AT via paved roads.
The AT Approach Trail departs from the crest of this waterfall, trailing to the Springer Mountain summit. It's at Springer that the Appalachian Trail begins its 2000+ mile, epic journey northbound for Maine, a hike attempted every year by thousands of AT thru-hikers.
And there's another well-loved trail that departs from the crest of this immense waterfall, the Hike Inn Trail. This trail winds through beautiful forest to reach the Len Foote Hike Inn, a backcountry inn that's accessible only via hike.
It's one of our favorite outdoor experiences in Georgia, and well worth the hike, with great food, great company and beautiful views at the Inn. (It's an amazing experience, to pack for a day hike but overnight in the wilderness, and a fantastic alternative to backpacking the distance to Springer Mountain.)
