Starting a New Dataviz Project | Jane's Design Process | Project 1 Ep. 1

Hello everyone! Happy new year.

I am starting a new video series exploring my process in more depth. In this video, I am going to talk about what my first week back to work is like and how I navigate a sea of ideas. I don't have a name for this project yet, so let's call it "Project 1" for now. I go through how I try to orient myself in the perspective of the market and what is on top of people's minds.

I am aiming to update this series regularly so stay tuned.

🕰️ Timestamps:

00:45 (What are people reading?) - I start off a new project by doing some general research of the kind of things that are on top of people's minds. To do this, I went on Amazon and looked up the kind of books that sold well last year. This is very crude, but the idea is to get me outside of my own bubble and put myself in the perspective of other people's shoes.

2:45 (Project 1) - I introduce the first project I am exploring for 2021. It doesn't even have a name yet! I show you a matrix I came up with on the fly to help me narrow down ideas.

7:16 (Diving in) - I do some preliminary user research on Reddit and explore what kind of burning questions people have about the topic I am exploring for my project.

10:15 (Organizing thoughts) - I use Notion to help me organize my findings. It's a place I centralize my notes and it helps me see my work at a glance.

Jane's Design Process is a series that shows my process of developing a print product from scratch. The print product will incorporate data visualization design as the focus to help understand complex concepts and enable people to see data in a nuanced way. The goal is to sell this product on the market. Stick around to see what I learn and how I overcome my obstacles.
