The Soldiers Tree is situated on the Mobarnane Road in County Tipperary. The story goes that in days gone by, probably in the early 1900's, a soldier weary of life hanged himself at this spot.
In our younger days (1950/60's) locals passing along the Mobarnane Rd would acknowledge the location and in particular a certain bough that at sometime in the past had been removed from the tree.
In the song it quotes, "a few miles out from Cashel" however the location is also a few Irish miles out from Fethard, and also a few miles from the village of Moyglass. So singers change the lyric to suit their home townland.
By day we all new the Soldier's Tree as it was a much loved old friend and local landmark. In giving directions to anyone places were either below, beyond or above the Soldier's Tree. However when passing the tree late at night we all moved along the road a little quicker.
The song can be found on Joe Giltrap’s album entitled ‘The Soldiers Tree’ which was published in 1998 and released in 1999 on Weaving Records.
