This is the Rohingya classic “O Sham Rangum Naw Zayore.” The lyrics say, “O husband, don't leave me. Don't go to Yangon to make money. We have everything we need at home here in Arakan. If you stay in Yangon for a long long time you may forget me.”
When Crossing Borders Music co-director Tom Clowes asked how the violin improvises along with the melody, Mohammed Salam and colleagues shared this song as a demonstration. They said it's important to know the scale or key of the song, its chords, and best to know the words and melody, too. In fact, it's best to spend time to practice the song together, even though there's improvisation in the performance.
