TAKE 55: Quick Cut offers short, sharp reflections on classic cinema, each under three minutes.
In the second Quick Cut, I take a look at Tension (1949), an MGM noir with all the right ingredients: Richard Basehart as a meek pharmacist reinventing himself, Audrey Totter in full femme fatale mode, and a young Cyd Charisse. But the film is derailed by Lieutenant Bonnabel, a detective who barges in to moralise, explain, and creep his way through the story. Instead of building suspense, he smothers it. What could have been a taut psychodrama becomes a fascinating failure, and a reminder that MGM didn't quite know what to do with noir.
