Moussaka is a classic Greek comfort dish made with layers of eggplants, a flavorful spiced meat sauce, and a creamy cheesy béchamel on top. It’s rich, cheesy, and melts in your mouth — perfect for family dinners or cozy nights in.
Ingredients:
1. 3 eggplants, sliced & salted
2. 1 onion, chopped
3. Ground beef
4. 1 tsp garlic purée
5. 3 tbsp tomato paste
6. Salt, pepper, turmeric
7. Oil for frying
8. Crumbled bread (as desired for layering)
9. For the cheesy béchamel: 2 tbsp butter, 1 cup flour, 1 cup milk, mozzarella cheese
Slice the eggplants, salt them for 15–30 minutes, then pat dry and fry or roast until golden. Sauté the chopped onion in a little oil, add the garlic purée, then add the ground beef and cook until browned. Mix in the tomato paste, salt, pepper, turmeric, and a splash of water, letting it cook until thick and flavorful. For the béchamel, melt the butter, add the flour, whisk in the milk until smooth and thick, then stir in mozzarella until creamy. In a baking dish, layer the eggplants, spread some meat sauce, sprinkle crumbled bread, add another layer of eggplants, more meat sauce, and pour the cheesy béchamel over the top. Bake at 180°C until the top is golden and bubbling.
