Rachel Biton spoke about her research on mangrove expansion in the Apalachicola Bay area highlighting work and findings from her master’s thesis under Dr. Josh Breithaupt with FSU. She holds a bachelor's degree in marine science with a biology track and a minor in environmental studies from Eckerd College where she was part of a wetland restoration laboratory studying mangroves in the Tampa Bay area. She also gained experience working at Florida’s Fish and Wildlife Research Institute (FWRI) in the Coastal Wetlands Laboratory, where she assisted with post-hurricane field restoration projects across South Florida’s mangrove ecosystems. She defended her thesis recently as a master’s research student under the advisement of Dr. Josh Breithaupt in his Coastal & Estuarine Biogeochemistry Laboratory at Florida State University’s Coastal & Marine Laboratory. Her research focuses on the expansion of mangroves at their northernmost range limit in northern Florida.
