So what causes a magnesium deficiency?
Well, there are several reasons:
Junk and processed foods are very common because our bodies use magnesium to process sugar.
Stress is another common one.
Pharmaceutical drugs and estrogen compounds such as oral contraceptives, antibiotics, and blood pressure medications can cause it too.
Even in the soil magnesium levels have been depleted because of the modern farming techniques. Fruits and vegetaebles contain less magnesium today than 80 years ago.
But why is magnesium important?
It is best known for its importance in muscle health, so it’s vital for the heart. It’s also involved with:
Energy production
Protein formation
Blood sugar and pressure regulation
Bone and teeth formation
Temperature regulation
DNA synthesis
And even Detoxification.
Symptoms of Magnesium deficiency could be:
Constipation
Sugar cravings
Restless Leg Syndrome
Muscle cramping
High blood pressure (Hypertension)
Anxiety and depression
Insomnia
Seizures
Fatigue
Chronic back pain
Migraines
Brain fog
Aggression
And even more!
If you have some of those symptoms you might want to have a test for magnesium deficiency.
Keep in mind that standard blood tests aren’t accurate for magnesium, even though they test for the other electrolytes like sodium, potassium, and calcium. The reason is that your body steals magnesium from muscles and bones to keep blood magnesium levels normal so that your heart can function properly among other things.
The recommended course of action is a Magnesium RBC blood test. You want to be 6.0-6.5, or on the top part of the range. Talk to your doctor about getting a Magnesium RBC blood test. You can also test your magnesium levels through a Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis. If your hair shows too high or too low levels of magnesium, you are most likely deficient and you need to supplement.
But fear not! I recently tested my levels and I was at 5.1 and I’m doing something about it. I’ve changed my diet, started getting supplements and things are improving. I also have two videos focusing on foods that are high in magnesium and the best magnesium supplements so watch out for those!
