Virtual Walk on Mammoth Hot Springs Terraces in Yellowstone - 4k Winter City Walks

Hello Walkers. Welcome to the Mammoth Terraces Virtual Walk and this Yellowstone National Park Walking Tour. Hopefully any Government Shutdown will be over quickly. We will start at the bottom and work our way up exploring. I’ll show you some great scenery as we go and provide some information.
Mammoth Hot Springs in Yellowstone National Park is a remarkable geological site featuring unique limestone travertine formations.
Off to our right is Liberty Cap, a 20-foot-high cone-shaped formation, represents the result of mineral deposits accumulated over thousands of years. This dormant hot spring cone demonstrates the park's ongoing geological processes.
These terraces are created by hot water emerging from underground, continuously depositing mineral layers that form intricate, ever-changing landscapes.
Devil's Thumb is a prominent rock formation that highlights the area's dramatic geological characteristics. Nearby, Palette Spring showcases mineral flows creating intricate patterns across the terraced surface. Notice the contrast of the living colors and the white travertine.
Let’s make our way upwards along the wooden boardwalk.
The park service uses these wooden boardwalks instead of cement because the formation is constantly if slowly changing all the time. The wood is easier and less destructive to install and remove.
If visiting in person, be sure to stay on the boardwalks and marked paths in thermal areas. They can be dangerous to walk on and you could do lasting damage to the formations.
The Mammoth Terraces boardwalks have several dead ends with pools or sites at the ends and several different pathways leading upwards.
This is Palette Spring from above. What looked like just white stone was hiding these colorful pools above.
In the winter, footing can be slippery. Be careful. The steps are also steep and we are at over 6000 feet of elevation.
Take plenty of rests as needed.
Minerva Terrace, currently not active, apparently is off to the right and presents a cascading landscape of white and cream travertine, forming natural terraced levels. Mound Spring offers a more rounded geological formation, adding to the area's diverse terrain.
Mound Spring is a dome-shaped geothermal feature known for its travertine terraces, formed by calcium carbonate deposits from hot, mineral-rich water. Constantly evolving due to shifting water flow, it showcases dynamic geothermal activity.

Jupiter Terrace features broad mineral deposits spreading like a stone waterfall. The Main Terrace Overlook provides a comprehensive view of the entire geological formation
Whitebark pine (Pinus albicaulis) is a high-elevation tree native to North America's mountain ranges, playing a critical role in stabilizing soils, regulating snowmelt, and providing food for wildlife like Clark’s nutcracker and grizzly bears. This species is threatened by white pine blister rust, mountain pine beetles, and climate change, leading to significant population declines.

This road is part of the “Upper Loop”. It’s a great place to cross country ski and see geysers. It’s also a great place to view the valleys extending below.
There’s usually much more snow at this time of year.

Smaller springs like Cupid Spring and Grassy Spring illustrate the detailed mineral buildup and subtle variations in the landscape.
Notice these tracks in the snow? Notice how they don’t have claw marks? This indicates it’s from some sort of cat, probably a Bobcat.
Canary Spring stands out with its distinctive yellow and orange mineral deposits, colored by thermophilic bacteria that survive in these extreme conditions. It also gives off a significant amount of dramatic steam from its hot water.
The Mammoth Terraces represent a dynamic ecosystem where geological processes continuously reshape the landscape. Even in winter, the area demonstrates the ongoing transformation of the earth's surface through mineral deposition and bacterial activity. I hope you enjoy this virtual walk.
