DIY Moss Ball Planter - Hanging Garden - Kokedama

Bring a dose of green to your space with this free hanging moss ball planters.
I fell in love with these hanging moss ball planters as soon as I saw them and knew I had to create a DIY tutorial!

While this DIY is inexpensive and rather quick to do, it can get really messy! It’s best to work outside and to have a workspace that can get a bit dirty.

what will you need
1. Plant - you could use herbs, ferns or flowering plants, shade-loving plants were used in this project. When deciding what plant you should use, figure out where you're going to hang the plant (sun/shade, indoor/outdoor) and then buy accordingly.
2. Dry sphagnum moss (you can buy a big bag from most florists or Bunnings) or green moss
3. Soil (some people recommend mixing one quarter Bonsai soil with regular soil but we just used soil that was around the plant we purchased and regular soil from the garden mixed with peat coir and potting mix to improve the soil)
4. Bowls of water
5. Thread, jute twine, cotton thread - it's up to you if you want to go natural or add a colour
6. Scissors
7. Gloves (if you don’t want your hands to get messy)


Easy Steps
1. Prepare surface
2. Soak sphagnum moss in water until damp. Rinse and set aside.
3. Soak peat coir in water and set aside.
4. Mix coir peat, soil and potting mix together.
5. Slowly add water and mix until a consistency develops forming a soil ball that stays together, about the size of a grapefruit/large orange. Set aside.
6. Separate plant if needed. Clean soil from roots.
7. Use damp sphagnum moss to wrap roots.
8. Bind with twine and set aside.
9. Break soil ball in half.
10. Place wrapped plant in the middle of one half of soil ball and then add the other side, shaping ball as needed.
11. Use the moss to wrap the ball and bind with twine.

Care:
These moss ball planters can last as long as any potted plant so long as you care for them.
When the ball feels dry, simply dunk it in a bucket of water.
In summer the balls tend to try out quite quickly, because of the big exposed surface and need to be watered every day, depending on the plants you used as well.
