The long drive from Portstewart to Ballyliffin (Ireland's Most Northern Course) did not diminish my excitement to play this Pat Ruddy gem which opened in 1995. The course is often referred to as the "Ballybunion of the North" or the "Dornoch of Ireland" because of its towering sand dunes. However, I left feeling that Ballyliffin's Glashedy course is best not compared to other great courses but should stand alone on its own beauty and merit. The course is incredibly challenging and plays exceptionally long compared to the other courses I played in Ireland. The greens were more undulating than the majority of courses played, and overall, the course played more like a course built to test the pros rather than a challenging course for locals. Fourteen of the eighteen holes are routed through high dunes, the fairways felt generous and the course laid out clearly in front of you with no blind shots. Ballyliffin hosts two courses, the Old Links Hackett) and the Glashedy. While I only played the Glashedy people around Ireland and even at the course were raving about both courses The wind seems more challenging at Ballyliffin than most other courses, with similar large dunes routing and only increased the challenge on this course. I hit more great drives that bumped and shimmed themselves into bunkers and tall grass than any other course on this trip. Ballyliffin is a fun, tough test of your golf game and is well worth a long trip up north for a great thirty-six (36) hole day.
