In 1845, Jonah Wright, enslaved in Georgia, tended the corn rows at dusk. By morning, his hat rested atop the scarecrow, its brim damp with dew. Jonah was nowhere to be found. When the wind blew, the scarecrow bent as if nodding toward the place Jonah vanished.
