Blue Ridge Daylilies Nursery & Garden Tour + an Interview with the Daylily Breeding Experts!

Today’s Episode was shot with our friends at Blue Ridge Daylilies! We had an awesome time touring the nursery and gardens! We also got into discussing some daylilly favorites with the breaders!

Tim and Matt, long-time enthusiasts of Japanese maples, trace their horticultural roots back to their early passion for daylilies. Tim bought his first car by working with Ralph and Lucy King selling daylilies in Hendersonville, North Carolina, while Matt bought the family's first computer, which eventually led to the creation of MrMaple.com. They recently visited Blue Ridge Daylilies in Alexander, NC, owned by Bob Selman and Eric Simpson, who have been cultivating daylilies for over 25 years. The garden features a stunning variety of award-winning hybrids, including the "Alien" series and others like "Mardi Gras Indian" and "Midnight in Paradise." Bob and Eric, both hybridizers, have introduced over 400 cultivars, and their plants have earned national recognition. The duo's creativity extends beyond breeding, with daylilies named after inspiration from pop culture or personal experiences, adding personality to their collection. They discussed how hybridizing daylilies involves selecting for color, pattern, and form, making each bloom unique. The visit also highlighted their upcoming event for the American Daylily Society, demonstrating the dynamic nature of this beloved hobby.
