On the way to the Mount Teide, (3,715 m (12,188 ft), our first stop was to admire the “Pino Gordo”, a famous pine tree with a trunk circumference of over 10 meters and an estimated age of 700-800 year. Its thick bark can withstand fires. This endemic species of the Canary Islands has become a symbol of adaptation and resilience.
Other stops along the to the volcano's summit offered us stunning desert-like panoramas, with arid, volcanic terrain and sparse vegetation.
To conclude the day, back at the sea level, we visited the town of Candelaria. The nine bronze #Guanche statues, a tribute to the island's indigenous rulers, create a “dramatic” ocean view. The town is a place of veneration for the Virgin of Candelaria, patron saint of the Canary Islands. The Basilica of Candelaria is located near the main square, Plaza de la Patrona de Canarias.
