In the 1940s, North America's roads and cars were getting bigger and more popular. Around then, railroads began to search for a method of providing extra visibility of grade crossing lights to wide or poor-visibility roads. The cantilever was the result of this search. A cantilever's purpose is to place grade crossing lights over the road for added visibility and safety.
Early cantilevers were fairly rickety and typically held only one set of lights; however, in the 1970s and 1980s, more modern cantilevers with space for multiple sets of lights began showing up. Today, these modern cantilevers with thick foundations and masts are the most common, and anything older is often a real treat. In this video, we will see all types of cantilevers, from old to modern. There is even a bridge, a cantilever with masts on either end. These are installed when the road is so wide that a cantilever could not reasonably be installed.
