I love this piece. I chose to learn it because from beginning to end, the music exemplifies the feelings I experienced from the first date with my girlfriend to the time I asked her to be mine, and our relationship beyond. A year and a half ago today, on the harbour in my hometown, I spun her around and asked her to be my girlfriend in the moonlight (clair de lune). In this recording I’m wearing this beautiful sweater she hand-knit me for Christmas last year!
Reflecting just on this play-through, I’m pretty happy with it. I was counting, but I used excessive rubato to keep the dynamics faithful to my inspiration. Having only completed RCM Grade 8, this Grade 10 piece presented a challenge, especially measures 37 and 41. I’m looking forward to learning some easier pieces next, including Beethoven’s Für Elise.
Lastly I fixed issues with my family’s piano by dismantling it and cleaning the keybed and motherboard. With some regular maintenance, I think it’s got lots of time left in the tank now.
