Kalighat Temple – A Sacred Shakti Peetha in Kolkata

Kalighat Temple is one of the most revered Hindu temples dedicated to Goddess Kali, located in the heart of Kolkata, West Bengal. It is one of the 51 Shakti Peethas in India, places where parts of Sati's body are believed to have fallen according to Hindu mythology.
Historical and Religious Significance

Legend: Kalighat is believed to be the place where the toes of Goddess Sati fell when Lord Shiva wandered the universe with her charred body.

Deity: The main deity is Kali Ma, represented in a unique form — her tongue is made of gold, and she has three eyes and four hands.

Age: Though the current temple was built around 1809 by the Sabarna Roy Chowdhury family, the site has been sacred for many centuries prior.
