Authentic German Footage of the Assault on Sevastopol. Operation "Catching the Sturgeon" (1942)
This video presents unique footage from German newsreels capturing the final, decisive assault on Sevastopol (Operation Catching the Sturgeon) in the summer of 1942.
After 250 days of heroic defense, the Germans, under the command of Field Marshal Erich von Manstein, amassed the 11th Army (350,000 men) and an unprecedentedly powerful artillery group, including the super-heavy guns “Dora” and “Karl,” against the city.
The chronicle shows:
The massive five-day artillery and air preparation that began on June 2, 1942.
Fierce battles for key fortifications such as the Mekenzievy Gory (Mekenzie Heights), the 365th Anti-Aircraft Battery (“Fort Stalin”), and the 30th Coastal Battery (“Fort Maxim Gorky-1”).
The turning point of the battle—the crossing of the Northern Bay by the German XXX Army Corps and the subsequent fall of Malakhov Kurgan and Sapun-Gora.
The focus is on the tragedy of the final days of the defense, the severe ammunition shortage faced by Major General Petrov's Coastal Army, and the final stand at Cape Khersones. Discover how the prolonged defense of Sevastopol, by tying up the German 11th Army, profoundly influenced the course of the war, effectively saving Leningrad from imminent capture.
