Comparison of 40th and 50th anniversary Tama Bell Brass BB-156. The 40th aniversary is set up with Tama 42strand snare wires, the 50th anniversary with 20strand Zoran Bibin wires (because it came with broken wires and a new replacement was also broken). :p
Im not really a mixin pro, this is just mixer stereo sum into audio interface, then some mild EQ and compression in garage band. I think the snare wires, in combination with mild compression, make the biggest difference in sound. I got another video, where the 40th anniversary is set up with 24strand puresound wires, which brings the sound of the two snares closer together. Maybe Ill upload it later! ;)
P.S.: ok, I actually uploaded it now - have a look for 42 vs 24 strand: • Tama Bell Brass Re-Issue BB156 40th A...
back to the snare and my impression by ear: the 40th anniversary sounds a little more modern, a little more produced, a little less "dark". The 50th anniversary has a rougher sound, tiny bit more balls, but also a more die-cast- / bell- / gong-like sound due to lesser audible 18-20strand wires (the mastercraft mechanic limits the strands to 20 max I think). Its hard to explain, but the shell is more audible when other things are less present. Sure, you can always use normal wires instead of extended, but that felt silly to me. The Mastercraft mechanic is pretty great and the snare wire tension can be adjusted very nicely and it stays like that during a gig.
