Leicester from 1930’s to 1990’s
The 1935 Royal Jubilee transforms the city centre - royal visits and the Coronation bring the people of Leicester out in force - carnivals and parades stop the trams and other traffic in the 1930’s and '40s throughout the city and county. Wartime sees the march for “War Weapons Week” and other events. The the Duke of Rutland takes time out to inspect the Ratby ARP.
Granny Garner celebrates her 103rd birthday in Leire Street in the '50s, Stocking Farm builds its own church in the '60s, and BBC Radio Leicester goes on the air in 1967. The 'Riding of the George' is revived in the '70s. In the '80s and '90s the pavements overflow for Caribbean Carnival and Diwali celebrations.
Through film and interviews “Leicester on Parade” captures the 'Leicester spirit', set against a backdrop that changes so fast that it's hard to believe what local pioneer film-makers have preserved for us.
