AMBER VALLEY PARISH #22: ALDERWASLEY

Hey up again Derbyshire folks, here’s another of those lovely out of the way places in Amber Valley that’s perhaps got more livestock than it has people. This is also another one that the locals like to confuse the non natives with as well, when it comes to the local pronunciation. This apparently, to the folk who live out here is Allerzlee….but I don’t so, Alderwasley it is. You can fight me over that later but you won’t win – and here’s why.

The name derives from Old English, and its actually more accurate to say it my way. It means “clearing near alluvial land growing with alders”, ley meaning clearing, was or wash meaning alluvial land, and alder being a reference to the trees. It was an ancient manor within Duffield Frith and contained a royal park, which these days we know as Shining Cliff Woods. In 1284 Shining Cliff was given to William Foun by Edmund Crouchback, Earl of Lancaster. Foun was given the job of maintaining the boundaries between the Pendleton and Peatpits Brooks, and we’ll meet the former of those watercourses in this video.

So what else have we got here then? Well, there are alder trees, that much is for sure. However, the village is also well known for having a school. Based in Alderwasley Hall, its a special school for children and young people with Aspergers and/or Speech and Language Difficulties. Shall we go and have a look? I say we should!
