Paul Wunderlich is a German artist known for his surrealist paintings and erotic sculptures which have earned him recognition as one of the most important members of the magic realist circle. His early figurative subjects feature scenes from Germany's oppressive history during World War II, then his work turns to surrealist works with sexual imagery and fantastical floating shapes. He was born on March 10, 1927 in Eberswalde, Germany and studied graphic art at the Landeskunstschule in Hamburg before becoming an art teacher. At that time, he learned the engraving techniques of the famous Emil Nolde and Oskar Kokoschka. Wunderlich then began to paint using the expressionist style of free-form tachism, which he later abandoned for more figurative imagery. In 1960, he moved to Paris, lived there for three years while working as a lithographer at the Deskjoberts workshop. From 1951 to 1960, he was a professor at the University of Fine Arts in Hamburg and, from the 1970s, he turned to sculpture. He lives between Hamburg and France before his death on June 6, 2010 in Provence, France.
