آرامگاه فراموش‌شده یک ایران‌شناس بزرگ در اصفهان

پروفسور آرتور پوپ، فیلسوف، پژوهشگر و ایران‌شناس برجسته آمریکایی، یکی از تاثیرگذارترین چهره‌های قرن بیستم در معرفی هنر و معماری ایران به جهانیان بود. او با عشقی بی‌پایان نسبت به ایران، تحقیقات گسترده‌ای در زمینه فرهنگ و هنر ایرانی انجام داد و وصیت کرد پس از مرگش در کنار پل خواجو و در ساحل زاینده‌رود به خاک سپرده شود.

آرامگاه آجری کوچکی که در نزدیکی پل خواجو قرار دارد، محل دفن آرتور پوپ و همسرش فیلیس اکرمن است؛ بنایی که توسط معمار معروف محسن فروغی ساخته شد. کمتر کسی از وجود این آرامگاه باخبر است، اما پوپ نقشی حیاتی در مرمت بناهای تاریخی ایران، از جمله مسجد شیخ لطف‌الله، ایفا کرد.

Arthur Upham Pope, an American philosopher, historian, and one of the world’s leading Iranologists, dedicated his life to studying and promoting Iranian art and architecture. So deep was his love for Iran that he asked to be buried in Isfahan, beside the Khaju Bridge, near the Zayandeh River, where his final resting place now lies alongside his wife, Phyllis Ackerman.

The small brick tomb near Khaju Bridge was designed by his friend, Iranian architect Mohsen Foroughi, with the support of Mohammad Reza Pahlavi. While few Iranians know about this tomb, Pope’s influence is deeply rooted in the preservation and global introduction of Persian monuments.
