1. Instant Karma (May 1972)
After the meticulous pop of Abbey Road and the stripped-back sound of Let It Be, The Beatles took a couple years' break, unsure what to do next. Realizing they hadn’t just rocked out in a while - not to mention performed live - the boys decided it was time to make some noise again, and to focus on making an album they could tour behind, like their early albums. They went all-out for their first tour in years, with a horn section, choir, and cranked up guitars! The Instant Karma tour kicked off in the summer of ‘72 with the first ever concert held at Wembley Stadium in London. In a rare bout of political commentary, this album is also notable for both Paul and John's reaction songs to the Bloody Sunday incident in Northern Ireland.

Reviews:
“While perhaps lacking in the depth and ingenuity of their last few efforts, Instant Karma will definitely have Beatles fans dancing, clapping and singing along.” – Melody Maker
“For the first time perhaps ever, The Beatles sound like they’re a step behind the pack. Instant Karma is, admittedly, a raucous good time – especially if you caught them on tour – but the riffs are just too run-of-the-mill to be truly musically exciting. The call-back to their early years on If You've Got Trouble (and its b-side, Leave My Kitten Alone) was perhaps meant to be nostalgic, but ultimately just shows that The Beatles are moving backwards instead of forwards.” – Rolling Stone
