►Replacing your XC90's tie rods is the best way to refresh the steering system. The inner tie rod joints and tie rod end ball joints are typically the quickest to wear out, so replacing them together should restore some steering feel and precision to the wheel. Both parts should last around 80,000 miles before showing signs of wear, but that's ultimately dependent on local road conditions.
Replacing the tie rods and tie rod ends is somewhat of a more involved DIY relative to a brake job. It can be messier and can mess with the alignment, so having patience throughout the process is key. However, special tools aren't required, so it's all doable with hand tools. Expect it to take a couple of hours from start to finish, and be aware you'll very likely need an alignment afterward.
In this video, Mike Hidalgo, FCP Euro's Professional DIYer, replaces the inner and outer tie rods on a SPA-chassis Volvo XC90.
