We occasionally get the question "What is a catalyst?" -- more commonly referred to as a hardener, and what effect it has on ink. Pad printing inks have different composition (or "component") needs, depending on the application. Some products require ink only application, while others require ink plus a hardener (or "catalyst").
When you mix an ink with a hardener this process starts catalyzing the ink to a hardened substrate. This process allows for increased abrasion resistant and durability. However, it also begins the timer for expiration, usually limited to 6-12 hours, which is the "pot life." Please note, this means that if you mix ink in an ink cup with a catalyst, it is important to clean the ink cup thoroughly before the ink hardens inside the cup.
