🎶 Sample Breakdown: Salt-N-Pepa – “Push It” (Next Plateau Records, 1987)
🔁 Sampled: Coal Kitchen – “Keep on Pushin’” (Baby Grand Records, 1977)
🎵 Interpolated: The Kinks – “You Really Got Me” (Pye Records, 1964)
The Funk Sample
The main groove of “Push It” comes from a little-known funk-rock band called Coal Kitchen, specifically their track “Keep on Pushin’.” Released in 1977 on Baby Grand Records, the song features that signature synth riff that was chopped, looped, and tweaked by producer Hurby "Luv Bug" Azor to become the spine of Salt-N-Pepa’s hit.
That funky synth gave “Push It” its electric, sweaty dancefloor energy—a perfect match for the group's bold and empowering delivery. It's minimal but infectious, which is why DJs loved to cut and loop it endlessly.
The Rock Interpolation
But that’s not all—listen closely to the “Ahhh, push it... push it real good!” part, and you’ll hear another surprise: the phrase “You really got me now / You got me so I don’t know what I’m doin’” is a clear interpolation of The Kinks’ 1964 rock anthem “You Really Got Me.”
Salt-N-Pepa didn’t sample the original audio—they re-performed the melody and lyrics, which makes it a textbook interpolation. It was unexpected at the time, blending British Invasion rock into a Brooklyn rap club banger, but it worked so well, you barely notice how wild the fusion really is.
💿 From underground funk to British rock to ‘80s hip-hop glory—“Push It” is one of the earliest examples of mash-up energy done right.
