It is not always that politicians go “hammer and tongs” on issues. In many cases the issue is not hotly political – like how we deal with earthquake prone buildings. The government is seeking to push out the time line for remediating earthquake prone buildings. In Christchurch we know the cost of both having earthquake prone buildings and remediating them. I think a blanket extension of time is the wrong approach as it doesn’t strike the right balance between the risk to life and the costs of remediation. I am confident that we will all work together on this issue that is important for all New Zealanders. At the same time as this legislation MBIE is reviewing the whole earthquake prone building system – you can have input here:
