After the Clone Wars, Darth Vader continued to pilot an Eta-2 Jedi starfighter, but what once felt like an extension of himself now seemed foreign. His cybernetic armor and increased height made the cockpit tight and awkward. Vader, much like the Jedi he once was, began modifying his starfighter, but this time out of necessity. He knew he needed an astromech droid, but rather than a companion, like R2-D2 had been for Anakin Skywalker, Vader merely needed a piece of equipment. Vader chose R4-K5, a droid once owned by the Jedi Order, to fulfill this role. Unlike the bond between Anakin and R2, R4 was just another piece of machinery providing tactical support. The cramped cockpit of the starfighter became unbearable. Every moment reminds Vader of the Jedi he once was. So he demanded a new starfighter, setting in motion the development of the TIE Advanced X1, a craft that would replace the relic of his former life.
