Bernese Carnival
Loud, colorful, and loud. Bern's Carnival is a three-day celebration, filled with dancing, and laughter. From Guggenmusik (Guggen music) and Schnitzelbänken (snack bars) to parades and wild parties in the streets, Bern's Carnival promises a spectacle full of humor, tradition, and community.

the carnival season truly begins on the Thursday after Ash Wednesday—this year on March 6, 2025. On this day, the symbolic bear is awakened from its winter slumber in the Käfigturm (caged tower) during the so-called Bear Liberation—and carnival begins. Food, drink, and music on Münsterplatz and the Guggenmusik (traditional folk music group) in Rathausgasse provide the first highlight shortly after the opening.

Nearly 20 restaurants and cellars will open their doors to the celebrating public this year, offering a diverse and exciting carnival program. Various groups will perform throughout the year, creating a lively atmosphere with the saxophone sounds typical of Bernese carnival.

The first Schnitzelbank soirée on Thursday evenings, starting at 8:20 p.m., is always worth a visit. You can choose from six different traditional venues. The Schnitzelbanks are satirical or humorous verses, often presented in rhyme, that poke fun at current events, personalities, or social issues. Whether it's Trump, Putin, or perhaps Federal Councilor Viola Amherd—we're excited to see what the topics will be and who will be ridiculed this year.
Two venues in the city will be open on Thursday evening: the Narrentempel on Kornhausplatz and a stage on Schmiedenplatz. Music and festivities will be held there from 9:00 PM until after midnight.

The official program continues on Friday afternoon. Younger carnival fans will especially enjoy the fun: at 2:30 p.m., the children's parade starts in the lower Zeughausgasse, continues through Rathausgasse, and then through Kreuzgasse to Münsterplatz.

Things are also getting lively on the stages again on Friday; this time, the various Guggenmusik groups will be performing their pieces on five different stages each. At 7:30 p.m., the groups Taktsurfer (Schmiedenplatz) and Pulswärmer (Gerechtigkeitsgasse) will open the evening with their performances. The program continues late into the night.

The grand finale of the three days of Carnival in Bern is the Grand Parade, which takes place on Saturday afternoon. At 2:30 p.m., the various cliques set off from the Nydegg Bridge toward Gerechtigkeitsgasse, Kramgasse, and Marktgasse, before proceeding to Bundesplatz. This is where the traditional Monster Concert takes place, where various Guggenmusik groups perform their pieces under the direction of three majors.
