Is Ukraine’s Magura V5 Naval Drone Changing Naval Warfare?

On December 31st, 2024, Ukraine’s Defense Intelligence reported a significant operational success with its MAGURA V5 unmanned surface vessel, which downed a Russian Mil Mi-8 helicopter over the Black Sea. Some outlets have described this event as a “first” in modern combat involving an unmanned surface vessel.

The MAGURA V5 drone boats have played a crucial role in countering the Russian Black Sea fleet, attacking multiple vessels and diminishing Russia’s combat effectiveness. For example, Ukraine successfully deployed six MAGURA V5 drones to sink a Russian missile corvette Ivanovets in early 2024.
